DOMESTIC SERVICES

SWITCHBOARD UPGRADE

Risk: A fuse board works functionally well, but there's a significant safety issue you should be aware of as property owners. Most old Fuse board do not have the required amount of Electrocution Protection Device's fitted. An Electrocution Protection Device, or residual current device (RCD), is a life-saving device installed to prevent you from getting a fatal electric shock if you touch something live, such as a bare wire. It can also provide some protection against electrical fires. RCDs offer a level of personal protection that ordinary fuses and circuit-breakers cannot provide.

The Stat's: To highlight the importance of RCD's we've got some statistics to provide their necessity:

  • 15 people are killed in Aussie homes every year in preventable electrical accidents where no RCD is installed, and

  • 300 people are hospitalised every year with serious electrical injuries and burns.

Australian Standards: 2.6.3.2.2 Domestic and residential installations - Additional protection by RCD with a maximum rated residual current of 30mA shall be provided for all final subcircuits in domestic and residential electrical installations. Where protection of a final subcircuit is required, RCD's shall be installed at the switchboard at which the final subcircuits originates.

Benefits: Peace of mind, It could be one of your family members using an appliance that becomes faulty or from something as simple as putting a picture hook into a wall and making contact with an electrical cable. Knowing that you have RCD's installed to provide a very high level of protection to all the wiring and power points on the circuit and any connected electrical appliances.

REWIRES

Substandard single insulated cable can breaks down and becomes brittle over time, exposing the live copper. This copper presents a severe risk of electric shock and electrocution to anyone working in or using the roof space for storage. Exposed copper also increases the likelihood of cables "shorting out" in the roof space; this can create sparks and potentially cause a fire in the roof space. Its highly recommended that this matter be dealt with as a matter of urgency.
